Over the past year, Black Lake has had the singular opportunity to work with Glenn Marks, a retired pastor and church builder, and his family to put together a truly unique memoir. Unless the Lord Builds the House tells the story of how Glenn and his wife Norma Jean have steadfastly followed the Lord throughout their lives, through good times and bad, building churches, raising a family, and helping to build God’s Kingdom. From the European battlefields of World War II to the home missions field of the Midwest, the book relates God’s faithfulness and tells Glenn’s story in his own words.
Jessica Newton is responsible for the book’s beautiful design and illustrations, and Greg Smith was creative director on the project. I served as general editor, compiling and editing Glenn’s materials. That’s a good way to become very familiar with a subject, and by the time we wrapped up I felt like I knew Glenn. However, given the geographical distance between us, I had never actually met him in person.
That is, until this past Friday, when Greg and I drove down to Elkhart, Indiana, to pay our client and friend a visit. We had the privilege of sitting down with Glenn and talking about the book and his plans for it. We were even able to pray with him, thanking the Lord for Glenn and Norma Jean’s story, the completion of the book, and the opportunities they will have to share it with others. We were also able to meet Glenn’s wife Norma Jean and visit with Cindy, one of Glenn’s daughters, who was instrumental in the process of creating and editing the book.
We get to work on a lot of great projects at Black Lake, but every once in a while we’re blessed with one of true eternal significance like Glenn’s. It was a true honor to meet Glenn and work on his book, and we wish him and his family all the best.
