Elissa Hillary developed a brand that balances personality and professionalism.
During our previous work with Local First, we’d developed a great relationship with Executive Director Elissa Hillary. Having wrapped our minds around her message and narrative, we were well equipped to help her develop her personal brand. We sat down with Elissa to talk about what the look and feel of her brand should be like, taking a look at competitors and brand Elissa loves. We then created mood boards with branding options ranging from cool to corporate. In discussion with Elissa, we settled on a brand persona that achieved an appealing balance while communicating Elissa’s story in a compelling way.
Elissa relates to active, outdoorsy, adventurous, positive, sporty, practical lifestyle brands that aren’t overly feminine.
She does want to appeal to a cool, eclectic, artsy crowd, but her brand needs to be serious and professional as well.
People are very important to Elissa’s brand. They need to be featured in photography and emphasized in the messaging.
Elissa’s brand needs to be inspirational, aspirational, and energetic, but balanced with a professional feel.
The Black Lake team developed a brand for Elissa that is bright, energetic, and inspirational without sacrificing professionalism. We then leveraged this brand across a variety of media, including a website, one-sheets, and identity collateral.

We also equipped Elissa to spread her message on social media and, more importantly, speeches and presentations. Collaborating with Elissa, the Black Lake team figured out which audiences Elissa and Local First need to communicate with. From there, we developed specifically tailored messaging for each audience.
